Project Description

Tonometry: Intraocular Pressure (IOP) Measurement:

Tonometry is the measurement taken to determine the intraocular pressure inside the eye.  This is one of the tests used to screen for glaucoma.  We have several different methods to measure intraocular pressure within the eye.

icare

iCare

The Icare is a hand held instrument which uses a very light probe is used to make momentary contact with the cornea. The measurement is barely noticed by the patient, and no anaesthetic drops are required to be instilled prior to taking the reading.

This makes IOP measurement a more pleasant experience for all patients, it also aids in the measurement of IOP in non-compliant patients (e.g. children or dementia patients).

Tonopen

Tonopen

The tonopen is an easy to use, hand held instrument which provides fast and accurate intraocular pressure reading.

Goldmann Applanation

Goldmann Applanation Tonometry

This method of tonometry is considered the gold standard of intraocular pressure measurement.  A small prism gently flattens part of your cornea and a microscope called a slit lamp is used to look at your eye. The pressure in your eye is measured by how much force is needed to flatten your cornea.
